I have never tasted alcohol. Yep, you read that right. Not a beer, not a sip of wine, notta. There are several reasons why.
I have seen firsthand the destruction it CAN cause. I have seen people get so twisted, that when I looked at them, I no longer saw "them." They became a different person. I've seen it tear families apart, destroy marriages, and make people think they were invincible. They not only put them self in danger, but also the lives of others. I've even seen someone put a gun to their head in a drunken rage because they were so intoxicated. That image is still hard to shake. More people get destroyed by it, than blessed. It may not be a sin to drink, but God certainly is clear about getting drunk. There are also several Scripture verses that caution us about alcohol.
// Proverbs 23:29-33 //
"Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things."
// Proverbs 31:4-5 //
"It is not for kings, Lemuel-It is not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights."
Another reason I don't drink is because I don't trust myself with it. If I never taste it, I can never get addicted to it. Would I have the strength to just drink it as a beverage, or would I give in to its lure and drink a few more?
I don't NEED it. What I need is God. What I want is to become more like Him. Yeah, I'm ready for your next thought. "But, Jesus drank wine." Assuming its the same wine that they make today, then ok, He did. But, He was also without sin. Jesus walked on water, healed the sick, brought the dead back to life, and was willing to die for our sins on the cross. I can't compare myself to Him, for I don't come close. I know I'm in dire need of Him to purify my heart, so I can be more like Him. Will drinking something that is a depressant, affects your way of thinking, distorts your personality, and holds such a stronghold on so many lives help me achieve that? Why are so many people addicted to it?! Why do so many people get killed because of drunk drivers? Why are people more bold to defend it then their own faith?
I will say I do know people that can drink and stop after a few. I give them kudos because I don't think I could. I am thankful for the testimony it gives me before the world though. I once talked to an unbeliever that was so distraught when he saw a Christian brother drinking at the bar he was at. He told me he went up to him and said, "what are you doing here? You don't need this. I do." Then he goes on to tell me that his whole night was ruined because this.
The world is watching. God is watching. Aim to not do anything that will hinder your walk with Christ or your testimony before the lost. We are all human and sin (me on a daily basis), but let's strive to bring the Lord great glory, not give the appearance of evil, and live a life that is pleasing to the Father. Your convictions may be different than mine and vice versa. But, let's strive daily to pray that the Lord would remove all that He hates and pour in all that He loves. May we strive to have hearts that are so pure that when the world looks at us, they just know we are His.
